Written by BAFTA-winning team Laurence Rickard & Martha Howe-Douglas (Ghosts, Horrible Histories) with Chris McCausland, hilarity and hijinks will commence on production this month at Sky Studios Elstree with the special set to air on Sky and NOW this Christmas.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chris McCausland & Lee Mack to star in Sky Original festive special ‘Bad Tidings’ [x]
Rebekah Staton, Sarah Alexander and Ben Crompton join the cast as production commences at Sky Studios Elstree.
Chris McCausland (The Wonders of the World I Can't See) and Lee Mack (Doctor Who, Inside No. 9, Brassic) star in Sky Original ‘Bad Tidings’, a mischievous festive special about two perpetually feuding neighbours in Stockport who become unlikely heroes, saving their street from notorious burglars with wacky booby traps and Great British banter.
Joining the cast alongside McCausland and Mack are Rebekah Staton, Sarah Alexander, Ben Crompton, Emily Coates, Josiah Eloi, Millie Kiss, Tupele Dorgu, Sunil Patel, Susan Kyd and Donna Preston.
‘Bad Tidings’ follows a tradition of successful festive Sky Originals loved by Sky customers and star a wealth of British talent. Last year, ‘The Heist Before Christmas’ starring James Nesbitt, Timothy Spall and Laura Donnelly, was the biggest rating Sky Original of 2023 and followed 2022’s ‘Christmas Carole’ staring Suranne Jones, and 2021’s ‘The Amazing Mr Blunden’ staring Simon Callow, Tamsin Greig and Mark Gatiss.
This year’s Sky Original Christmas special revolves around grumpy home-security expert Neil (Mack) and his neighbour Scott (McCausland), who insists on keeping his Christmas lights illuminated all-year-round. And mixing up their bins, criticising Neil’s ‘project’ car and generally winding him up. Basically, Scott’s a git. He’s also blind and all the other neighbours think he’s great.
When Scott is appointed head of the Neighbourhood Watch, Neil is the only one to question his suitability for the role. Their tit-for-tat argument culminates in Neil triggering a power-cut across the entire street. On Christmas Eve.
Everyone is forced to evacuate, and Neil and Scott are left alone and on guard. But the local crime family decide to rob every house on the street in a single night, and the pair must set aside their differences to defeat them. They’ve got no lights, no cameras, no alarms and one of them is blind. Which might just be an advantage…
Chris McCausland said: “Talk about a back of an envelope idea that has got out of hand, we are now making a Christmas comedy film and it's going to be awesome. I can't wait to get up to some hilarious mayhem with Lee and bring some festive spirit into people's living rooms this Christmas!”
Lee Mack added: “I love Chris McCausland, I love the script and I Iove Christmas. Where do I sign?”
‘Bad Tidings’ is written by Laurence Rickard & Martha Howe-Douglas with Chris McCausland, and is produced by Sky Studios. The film is directed by Tim Kirkby with Adnan Ahmed from Sky Studios producing. Anil Gupta Executive Produces for Sky Studios. NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution handles international sales on behalf of Sky Studios.

Jack & The Beanstalk - Alban Arena, St Albans - Dec ‘22
Tumblr media
Whilst his local theatre, the Canterbury Marlowe, put on Sleeping Beauty, Kent born Eastenders’ legend, Shaun Williamson, starred in this winter’s pantomime of Jack & The Beanstalk in the more intimate Alban Arena. We were regulars at the New Wimbledon Theatre and the New Victoria Theatre, Woking but after moving to Hendon, the 17 minute train ride to St Albans seemed like the best bet for this fall’s festive fun. Despite being in a alternative setting to a traditional theatre, it did not disappoint; Rather than an orchestra pit, the live band were in the top stage left balcony, similar to Peter Pan at Maidstone studios a few years back, giving the opportunity for Shaun to break from character (which was a play on words of an Oasis ‘90s hit) to have an amusing back and forth with the conductor. More fun for the whole family, with similar scenes and themes to the bigger known creations currently running, continued with Swashbuckle’s Ian Kirkby, who made sure all ages could enjoy Dame Trott. The talented cast, which included Chanice Alexander-Burnett (Les Miserable), AJ Jenks (Saturday Night Fever), Damian Patton and Lauren Chia (Frozen), brought relevance, jokes and surprises of the highest quality and even cuteness.
What this show gains in affordability and value for money, it does not lack in production and enjoyment; making it clear why there is a full house at every show. See for yourself, with up to 3 shows running daily (but not Dec 31st) until Jan 2nd. Also, book early for comedian Harry Hill (Wed 18th Jan), Spirit Of Dance (Wed 22nd Feb), dancer Giovanni Pernice (Sat 25th Feb), Ukrainian opera Madama Butterfly (Tue 7th March), comedian Henning When (Fri 10th March), comedian Chris McCausland (Fri 17th March), tribute The Bootleg Beatles (Mon 20th March), footballer Paul Merson (Thu 6th April), Friends: The Musical Parody (Tue 18th April) and comedian Dave Gorman (Sat 29th April), all coming up over the next few months at Alban Arena.

4K Ultra HD Review: Mad Max
Tumblr media
Much like actors are prone to typecasting, so too are filmmakers often pigeonholed in the genre in which they first find success. When doctor-turned-director George Miller made his propitious debut with 1979's Mad Max and followed it up with two sequels over the next six years, he seemed destined to continue to work in action. Instead, the Australian filmmaker explored comedy (The Witches of Eastwick), drama (Lorenzo's Oil), and family fare (Babe: Pig in the City, Happy Feet) before returning to his roots with Mad Max: Fury Road, earning six Academy Awards.
Miller's skill in the visual medium was apparent from the start with Mad Max. Rather than highlighting Australia's lush landscapes, he and director of photography David Eggby (Pitch Black, Scooby-Doo) show a desolate, muted Melbourne. While it's often overshadowed by the ostentatious, post-apocalyptic dystopia of its sequels, the original film depicts a near-future that takes place prior to - but on the cusp of - the complete collapse of society. Miller and co-writer James McCausland maintain a sliver of normalcy, but an energy crisis has triggered the beginning of the end.
Tumblr media
Mad Max wastes no time getting to the madness, opening with a reckless, high-speed chase in which the unruly gang wreaking havoc on the streets of Australia kills one of the few remaining members of the disheveled police force attempting to uphold the law. Leather-clad lawman Max Rockatansky (a young Mel Gibson) joins the hunt, and it becomes personal when the gang's ringleader, Toecutter (Hugh Keays-Byrne, who also plays the villainous Immortan Joe in Mad Max: Fury Road), targets his wife (Joanne Samuel) and infant son. The rage-filled Max takes his supercharged car and seeks vengeance against the leader and his loyal acolytes.
Mad Max may be tame by today’s standards, particularly when compared to the insanity that would follow in the franchise, but consider the context upon its initial release. This low-budget, independent film from a first-time filmmaker with an inexperienced cast and crew in Australia unexpectedly delivered 93 minutes of the most death-defying stunts committed to celluloid at the time. The cast and crew threw caution to the wind, resulting in a palpable sense of danger, while dramatic elements accentuate the action.
Tumblr media
Mad Max drives onto 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics. It has been restored in 4K from original elements with Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range, resulting in a sharp, vibrant picture that blows the previous Blu-ray releases from Scream Factory and MGM out of the water. Three audio options are available: the original mono Australian track, a 5.1 lossless Australian track (in which the many explosions and crashes sound massive), and the American dub. A slipcover with alternate artwork is included.
Both the 4K UHD and Blu-ray discs include a casual, enjoyable audio commentary by Eggby, art director Jon Dowding, and special effects artist Chris Murray, while the Blu-ray houses the rest of the special features. Most notably, Miller sits down for a new, 30-minute interview about the film and its legacy. It's filmed via video chat due to Covid-19, but it's great to have the director's input, as he was absent from previous editions. He discusses the movie's origins as a contemporary story, being smitten by Gibon's audition, the guerilla filmmaking tactics, and more.
Tumblr media
Scream Factory's 2015 interview featurette with Gibson (who looks back on the film with fondness and honesty), Samuel, and Eggby is ported over, as are two mini-documentaries produced by MGM in 2002: Mad Max: The Film Phenomenon, a 25-minute piece about the movie's impact, and Mel Gibson: Birth of a Superstar, a 16-minute featurette about Gibson’s rise to fame featuring Eggby, actors Piper Laurie (Carrie) and John Jarratt (Wolf Creek), and more. Other extras include a trailer commentary by writer Josh Olson (A History of Violence), two theatrical trailers, three TV spots, and three radio spots.
Mad Max is available now on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray via Kino Lorber Studio Classics.
